Our kids have one 15 minute recess per day. They need to move more! We are going to have a whole generation of kids who struggle with learning and anxiety. Breathing and movement are a key to coping. These pathways are a great idea!

Attention-to-task is a variable that directly relates to concerns of classroom teachers. The limited available research has demonstrated moderate to good evidence that physical activity during the school day improves attention-to-task in elementary school students.
Students need to move during classroom breaks!
This [study] was one of the first and few to evaluate the effects of physical activity breaks for on-task behavior in the intermediate-level school population. Balance was indicated as the most significant student perceived improvement in their ability to sustain focus, though the other physical activity breaks all faired better than a non-movement break from class.
Regular physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as:1
- Heart disease.
- Cancer.
- Type 2 diabetes.
- High blood pressure.
- Osteoporosis.
- Obesity
ALL materials are recommended to be applied to a non-waxed floor, although we have a set of The Alphabet which was placed over wax AND has been successfully been cleaned and waxed over for 2 years already!
Balance Bases can be applied to the walls for a different option for balance stations.
Our Alphabet pathway has been doing very well for two years, despite having been applied over waxed floors! They have been cleaned and waxed each year and are doing great! We expect them to last 4-5 years, but it is not a guarantee due to the fact that schools use different procedures and agents for floor care.
